UNESCO has discovered the unauthorized renovation of Afghanistan’s Bamiyan Buddhas which had been damaged by the Taliban.
The team’s leader, Michael Petzet, claims that the work was discussed with Afghan authorities, but UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Culture Francesco Bandarin asserts that the Afghan Minister of Culture had been unaware of the project.
