Indus Heritage Program, India

South Asia’s first cities emerged in the region of modern-day Pakistan and western India between 2600 BC and 1900 BC, built by a culture that developed at approximately the same time as those in Egypt and Mesopotamia and with which it maintained extensive trade contacts. Not discovered until the 1920s and still little understood, the cities and towns of this ancient culture have been greatly damaged and destroyed by looting, development and neglect. The GHF-supported Indus Heritage Program seeks to change this dynamic by raising awareness of this unique civilization, encouraging its study and protecting its remaining sites before they are lost forever.
