High in the Anti-Atlas Mountains of Morocco, ancient granaries known as igoudar stand testament to the stunning resilience and isolation of Berber communities. Suffering from centuries of neglect, these historic monuments may nonetheless prove vital for energizing tourism and much needed local development.

Architect and anthropologist Dr Salima Naji, our project partner, recently presented about the igoudar to an audience of trustees and supporters. Since 2015, we have worked with local partners to promote community-driven protection of the fragile igoudar. With the support of the regional council of Souss-Massa, we are helping develop local economies, women-led initiatives, and sustainable igoudar tourism. Our programs will build capacity for local workers, create new opportunities for women in tourism and local products, and engage over two thousand children in heritage education.

We extend our gratitude to Dr Naji for her presentation, to Alka Bagri and The Conduit in London for enabling the event to take place, and to all who were able to attend. Our programs are possible with the support of our trustees and donors — thank you!

We will soon announce a trip to the igoudar for October 2019. Email us for travel information, and join our newsletter for more updates about the igoudar and other projects.
